Quirks in OCMail

General Quirks

Sending/CCing/BCCing Messages to Self

When sending, CCing, or BCCing a message to oneself with OCMail, it may not appear in your inbox. This is true whether you are using the web interface or a desktop client like Thunderbird or Mail.

Web Interface Quirks

Vacation Auto-Responder

Unlike when using ObieMail, vacation auto-responders within OCMail must be added and removed manually. That is, you cannot set dates for the response to begin and end. Take care to remove the responder after your vacation!

When the vacation responder is enabled, you’ll see a banner across the top of any OCMail page. To stop sending your response, click end now within the banner. To edit the response, click Settings.

Message Count Discrepancy

The message count in your e-mail client may differ from the count in the OCMail interface due to threading. OCMail counts threads as one message, while your desktop e-mail client regards each message within the thread separately.

Sending Executable Files

As a security measure to prevent potential viruses, OCMail doesn't allow you to send or receive executable files (such as files ending in .exe) that could contain damaging executable code. OCMail won't accept these types of files even if they are sent in a zipped (.zip, .tar, .tgz, .taz, .z, .gz) format. If this type of message is send to your OCMail address, it is bounced back to the sender automatically.

Quirks in Thunderbird

Moving Local Folders Up to the Server

Dragging local folders back up to the OCMail server via the Thunderbird client may only work for the first few folders. Subsequent folders do not appear to move (do not display the "downloading" in the lower-left status bar). To resolve the problem, simply close Thunderbird and reopen.

Quirks in Mac Mail

Wrong Dock Count

OCMail may display the wrong count of new messages in the dock if, within Preferences, you have chosen to display the count of all new messages and not those within the inbox. With this option selected, the dock count will increase with each instance of a message (e.g., in the inbox as well as in a folder into which the message was automatically filtered).

Read Messages Still Appear Unread

Messages may appear unread even after you have viewed them from within the OCMail web interface if you have them set to skip the inbox and automatically filter to a folder or label. To refresh the count, click on the message within Apple Mail.

Multiple Draft Messages

OCMail automatically saves drafts of your messages every few seconds. Instead of overwriting the message, Apple Mail saves a new copy of the message to the drafts folder; because of this behaviour, you may find multiple messages in the drafts folder with the same subject line, each with progressively more of the message text. Only the final draft is actually sent, and the rest of the partial messages are moved to the Trash folder.

Smart Mailboxes

Smart Mailboxes in Apple Mail 10.5 do not play nicely with OCMail. Mail may not be delivered or sorted properly or even be delivered at all when using Smart Mailboxes. Replace these with regular mailboxes and set up Rules in Mail Preferences to filter the mail into the various folders.

Remove Attachments Deletes the Message

With IMAP, using the 'Remove Attachments' feature in Apple Mail (Message > Remove Attachments) deletes the message or draft. You should still be able to find the message in Apple Mail's [Gmail]/All Mail or [Gmail]/Trash folders, or by performing a search from the Gmail interface.

Quirks in Outlook

Non-Latin Label Names

Non-Latin label names aren't currently supported by the English versions of Outlook 2003 and Outlook Express. We suggest using a version of Outlook that matches your Gmail language preference, or changing your Gmail label names to Latin characters.
