Importing Contacts into OCMail
This article provides directions for exporting your contacts from whatever e-mail system you previously used and importing them into Thunderbird, Mac Mail's Address Book, and the OCMail web interface.
Exporting Contacts from Your Old System
Exporting from Thunderbird
If you have contacts stored in Thunderbird, you can export them by following these steps:
- In Thunderbird, click the Address Book button in the toolbar.
- In the window that pops up, select the address book you want to export in the left-most panel, probably "Personal Address Book".
- Go to Tools > Export.
- Choose a name for the file, and make sure it's set to save as a "Comma Separated" file, not "LDIF" or "Tab Delimited"; then click Save.
- This should produce a .csv file of your contacts that can be imported into Thunderbird, Mac Mail's Address Book, the OCMail web interface, and most other e-mail programs.
Exporting from Mac Mail's Address Book
- Download and unzip A to G, and double-click it. When the window pops up, click "Export to Desktop..."
- You should now have on your desktop a .csv file of your contacts that can be imported into Thunderbird, Mac Mail's Address Book, the OCMail web interface, and most other e-mail programs.
Importing Contacts into Desktop Clients
Thunderbird
To import contacts in Thunderbird:
- Go to Tools > Import.
- The Import dialog will open; choose Address Books and click Next.
- Choose Text file, and click Next.
- Find the .csv file you want to use. Click Open.
- If the operation was successful, you should receive a message like Addresses successfully imported from [blank] - Imported address book contacts. Click the Finish button.
Mac Mail
Mac Mail pulls its contacts from Address Book instead of storing its own. To add a .csv file to Address Book:
- Open Address Book.
- Go to File > Import.
- Choose Text file.
- Find the .csv file you want to use. Click Open.
Importing Contacts to the OCMail Web Interface
Note: If you are currently using Thunderbird or Mac Mail/Address Book to store your contacts and you plan to continue using the same desktop client with OCMail, your contacts will remain available to you after the OCMail switch. There is no need to import your contact list unless you want those contacts available to you via the OCMail web interface.
- In OCMail, click Contacts (on the left-hand side between mailboxes and labels).
- In the upper right-hand area, click Import.
- Click Browse and choose the .csv file you exported from Thunderbird or Mac Mail. If you haven't done this step yet, see "Exporting Contacts from Desktop Clients" below.
- Either choose the group you want to add these contacts to or leave that section unchecked; click Import.
- Your contacts should now be imported, which may take up to several minutes. Your newly imported contacts may not be available until you reopen OCMail.
