Network News

There is no current news regarding the network at this time.

Did you get a message from "THE OBERLIN WEBMAIL TEAM?"

This one is sometimes from "webmaster@info.edu" and tries to con clients into sending their ObieID and password off to prevent "shutting down your mailbox." This is yet another phony email message, "phishing" around for the unwary fish to bite. Please just delete the messages, or mark them as spam if you choose.

Are you having trouble getting to the network?

DNS Changer Trojan infects Macs around Campus! A "trojan horse" infection has been seen on a couple of student Macs. A couple of Windows PCs have been infected with similar viruses. Symptoms: network connections work for 20-30 seconds only, then break. Disconnecting and reconnecting gets it to work again, for about 20 seconds. Looking in the Network Control Panel, TCP/IP settings, often shows the "DNS Server" entries to be blank, empty. You've been infected!

This infection can come to your Macintosh by several means, most commonly in the form of a video (YouTube, or elsewhere) that before it displays claims you need to first install a new "codec" or update your system. The update is actually the infection! Our Sophos antivirus for the Mac does catch at least some of these, so if you haven't bothered installing that because "Macs just don't get viruses," perhaps it's time. A tool to remove the DNS Changer Trojan can be found at SecureMac.com.

Wireless Updates

Most wireless access points have been replaced with new Cisco units, and all wireless clients have been separated into their own network segment. Performance issues often turn out to be the old favorite issues caused by interference (microwave ovens, cordless phones), poor signal in some areas due to heavy masonry construction, or the effects caused by older laptops slowing everyone down connected to the same access point. Some of these issues we can address, others are trickier. If you seem to be having problems connecting with wireless, give the Help Desk a call, but a good alternative might be to plug into the wired connection on the wall...
