Note:
These instructions will work for Virex versions 7.5 through 7.7 (7.x is used to denote all versions). Be sure to install the correct version of Virex for your operating system. If you have any questions about which one this is, please call the Help Desk at x58197.
Important update
Oberlin College is currenly migrating from Virex anti-virus to Sophos anti-virus software. Our CIT professionals have found Sophos to be significanly better at removing malcious viruses. You can obtain a copy of Sophos anti-virus software at the Oberlin College software download page
Take these additional steps to remove Macro Viruses from your Computer.
- Make sure Microsoft Word is not open. Quit Microsoft Word if necessary.
- Find the Normal file (for Office 2004, it is correctly located in Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data; for earlier versions, the file is in Applications/Microsoft Office/Office. (Many users find it easiest to use Sherlock or the find function to locate the normal template.) Move the file to the Trash and empty it.
- Run a full scan on your Home Directory using Virex as described here.
- Open Microsoft Word. Open Preferences under the Word Menu: Choose Security, make sure "Warn before opening a file with macros" is checked.
NONAME.dat
Occasionaly Virex will not recognize the thus.gen virus. If this occurs, you will see a reference to "NONAME.dat" (or something similar) in the virus scan log, and Virex will inform you that it was unable to clean the file. Simply deleting the Normal file (see above) will allow Virex to recognize the thus.gen virus. You may then continue with the standard removal process.
