What is the ObieID?

Your ObieID is a username and password that can be used on a large variety of Campus systems, eliminating the need to remember a large number of different username password combinations.

Your ObieID will normally follow the form: first initial of first name, followed by first seven characters of last name. Thus, if your name is Martha Washington, your ObieID will be mwashing. If there happen to be two Martha Washingtons on campus, the first letter of the middle name will follow the first letter of the first name, with letters of the last name included to equal a total of 8 characters. Thus, Martha Ann Washington and Martha Sue Washington would be assigned mawashin and mswashin, respectively. You will be required to change your ObieID password every 122 days.

Which systems use ObieID?

E-mail, Blackboard, VPN, Windows lab and faculty/staff office computer logins, Stulocker/Stafflocker, Novell Netware file shares, Odyssey, Network Authentication, and faculty/staff/student web accounts.

Services not yet included are: Meeting Maker, Presto, Banner, departmental and student organization web accounts, Event Management Scheduling (EMS), Raiser’s Edge, FAMIS, and password-protected web pages on the main campus web server.

Can I continue to use the same old password I’ve been using for years?

No. Security concerns have become too great. In order to adhere to security best- practices, we must enforce stronger passwords, changed on a regular basis.

The system made me enter a password that is hard to remember, what happens if I forget it?

The first time you use the ObieID web site (https://obieID.oberlin.edu), you need to establish your password self-service questions. This consists of three, easy-to-remember, personalized questions that can be used to reset your ObieID password. If you have not set these questions ahead of time, and subsequently forget your password, you will need to contact the CIT Help Desk to have your password reset.

The new password rules are too difficult. How do you expect me to remember such a jumble of letters and numbers?

Sometimes it’s helpful to think of a phrase (including numbers and punctuation) as a basis for your password. Examples: “I drive a ‘56 Chevy.” becomes Ida’56C. “Wow! I ate 8 hotdogs!” becomes W!Ia8h! (Don’t use these examples, please).

I forgot my password, and I forgot or did not set my password self-service answers.

Please contact the CIT help desk in Mudd 005 with a copy of your photo ID.

I changed my ObieID password through the Web Interface, but I still can’t log in.

The system you are trying to access may be using credentials other than the ObieID (see ”Which systems use ObieID?” above). If you’re certain that you’re attempting to authenticate to an ObieID system, remember that passwords are case-sensitive. If you need further assistance, contact the CIT Help Desk.

I keep trying passwords, and the ObieID Web page won’t take any of them.

Your password must adhere to follow certain rules.

Not any of the previous 3 passwords used
Not a dictionary word, sequence, or username
Contain at least 6 characters
Contain at least 1 alphabetic character (e.g., abc)
Contain at least 1 numeric character (e.g., 123)

I set my Password Self Service answers, but have now decided that I don’t like some of the questions or answers that I chose.

As long as you know your current password, you can go back at any time to change your questions and/or answers.

I’ve changed my ObieID password, but my Windows password hasn’t changed.

You must be using the Novell Netware client when logging into your Windows computer. Make sure the “Workstation Only” box is unchecked. After changing your ObieID password, the next time you log into Novell, you will use your new ObieID password. You will then be presented with a second login box to access Windows. Type in your previous Novell/Windows password and check the box next to "Change your Windows password to match your Novell password after a successful login" to synchronize your passwords.
