LDAP (Oberlin E-mail Directory) Setup

If you're using a desktop e-mail client for the first time, you'll need to configure it to access the Oberlin Email Directory (LDAP). To do so, follow the instructions below:

Setting Up LDAP for Thunderbird

  1. In Thunderbird, click on the Address Book icon in the toolbar.
  2. From the File menu choose New and then LDAP Directory.
  3. Enter the following:
    • Name: Oberlin
    • Hostname: ldap1.cc.oberlin.edu
    • Base DN: o=oberlin.edu, o=oberlin-college
  4. From the Thunderbird menu choose Preferences (on a Mac) or from the Tools menu choose Options (on Windows or Linux). Select Composition, and make sure both Local Address Books and Directory Server boxes under Address Autocompletion are checked.
  5. To search for Oberlin email addresses, select Oberlin on the left, in the Address Books column and type all or part of a name in the search bar and your results will appear below.

Setting Up LDAP for Mac OS X Mail

  1. Open the Address Book application (Found in Macintosh HD→Applications→Address Book or in your dock).
  2. Go to Preferences in the Address Book menu
  3. Click on the LDAP tab
  4. Enter the following:
    • Server: ldap1.cc.oberlin.edu
    • Search Base: o=oberlin.edu, o=oberlin-college
    • Port: 389
    • Scope: Subtree
    • Leave the Authentication section blank.
  5. Click Save to close the window.
  6. Make sure the Active box is checked next to the name of the server.
  7. Close the Preferences window.

Setting Up LDAP for Other Email Clients

The Oberlin College directory runs on an LDAP server. Although CIT only supports the email clients listed above, it may be possible to setup an LDAP directory on other clients. In order to do so, you will need the following information:

Hostname: ldap1.cc.oberlin.edu
Base DN: o=oberlin.edu, o=oberlin-college
Port Number: 389
