Computer Requirements

Minimum Requirements

If you have a new Apple Macintosh or Windows PC (purchased in the last four years), chances are that you will need little or nothing to connect to the network. If you have an older computer, on the other hand, you may have to upgrade hardware or software to take advantage of Resnet. If your computer does not support Resnet, the CIT can provide a live connection and will recommend a cable or adaptor, but can provide no further assistance; it is up to you to configure your hardware and software appropriately. If your computer is an older model, you may want to check out the basic hardware requirements. If your computer does not meet these requirements, you will be unable to use your Resnet connection. This is not to exclude people with older computers; older computers simply don't work well on modern networks.

If you do not have a computer or do not have access to Resnet, all of the resources available on Resnet can be found by using a computer in one of the many available computer labs on campus.

Oberlin College Network Cost

You will probably need an Ethernet_cable and an ethernet adapter. This will generally cost anywhere from $0-$50. Adapters for laptop/portable designs sometimes cost more. Ask CIT cit@oberlin.edu for more information about your particular configuration. However, you should also consider RAM, hard disk, processor, or computer upgrades in your cost of connecting to the network. Unlike most college and university campuses in the United States, installation and configuration of network hardware and software is offered as part of your tuition.

Network Authentication

If your computer meets all of the minimum hardware requirements, ensure that you are running up-to-date anti-virus software. Free anti-virus software is available on CIT's website (https://hera.cc.oberlin.edu/cit/downloads/virusprot.html) with a valid ObieID and password.

Next, connect to the Oberlin College network using a wired Ethernet connection or ObieWiFi, open a web browser and proceed with the Safe•Connect policy key installation. Sign in using your ObieID and password and you're all set! For more information on authenticating to our network, visit our http://citwiki.oberlin.edu/index.php/Network_Authentication.
